Marzo 2003 - marzo 2009: a 6 anni dalla guerra l'Iraq non ha ancora trovato pace e democrazia

Una conferenza in occasione dell'anniversario della guerra in Iraq è stata ospitata ieri 18 marzo, al Parlamento Europeo da Luisa Morgantini, Vice Presidente del PE, e da Giusto Catania, (MEP GUE/NGL) e co-organizzata con il BRussells Tribunal.

Aprendo l'evento e dando il benvenuto agli ospiti, Luisa Morgantini ha dichiarato: "la guerra e l'occupazione in Iraq sono parte di una politica militare degli Stati Uniti, e purtroppo appoggiata da alcuni paesi europei, una politica che ci impegniamo a fare in modo che non succeda più". "Milioni di persone - ha ricordato la Vice Presidente - hanno manifestato nelle strade di tutto il mondo per dire no alla guerra. Questi milioni di persone non sono stati ascoltati: ecco perché la guerra e l'occupazione dell'Iraq è stata anche un fallimento delle nostre democrazie. Dopo 7 anni non vediamo ancora pace, sicurezza e sviluppo nel paese, dove anzi ci sono povertà, morte, milioni di rifugiati, orfani, tortura, discriminazione e oppressione delle donne".

"Oggi - ha detto Luisa Morgantini concludendo il suo intervento - vorrei rendere omaggio alla popolazione civile irachena che è ancora in pericolo e che spera che, con la fine dell'occupazione, sarà in grado di costruire il proprio paese e di essere padrona del proprio destino e rinascita".

La conferenza al Parlamento Europeo ha analizzato 3 temi principali: la situazione umanitaria critica, in particolare nel settore della salute e per i rifugiati; la questione del petrolio, sottolineando che il paese non è stato ancora in grado di tornare ai livelli di produzione che aveva prima della guerra; e una sessione finale su quale può essere il futuro del paese. L'evento si è concluso con un appello alla pace, indipendenza e democrazia per l'Iraq e il suo popolo.

March 2003 - March 2009: 6 years after the war Iraq has still not seen peace and democracy

A conference on the occasion of the anniversary of the war in Iraq was hosted yesterday 18^TH March, in the European Parliament by Luisa Morgantini, Vice President of the EP, and Giusto Catania (MEP GUE/NGL), and co-organised by the BRussells Tribunal.

Opening the event and welcoming the guest, Luisa Morgantini said: "the war and the occupation in Iraq is part of a military policy carried out by the US and unfortunately supported by some European countries, a policy that, we commit ourselves, will not happen again". "Millions of people - recalled the Vice President - demonstrated in the streets all around the world to say no to war. These millions of people were not listened: that is why the war and occupation of Iraq was also a failure of our democracies. After 7 years we are not yet witnessing peace, security and development in the country, where actually there are poverty, death, millions of refugees, orphans, torture, discrimination and oppression of women.

"Today - said Luisa Morgantini concluding her intervention - I would like to pay tribute to all the civilian Iraqi population who is still in danger and who hope that, with the end of the occupation, they will be able to build their country and to be the owner of their destiny and resurgence".

The conference at the European Parliament analysed 3 main issues: the critical humanitarian situation, particularly in the health sector and for the refugees; the question of oil, highlighting that the country is still not able to reach the level of production it used to have prior to the war; and a final session on what could be the future of the country. The event ended with a call for peace, independence and democracy for Iraq and its population.
