Mentre a Gerusalemme Est continuano le demolizioni di centinaia di case palestinesi, anche la cultura palestinese è bersaglio delle politiche israeliane.

Negli ultimi due giorni sono stati arrestati almeno 20 organizzatori delle celebrazioni di Gerusalemme Est "capitale della cultura araba 2009". Il 19 marzo scorso i soldati israeliani hanno fatto irruzione in un meeting organizzativo degli eventi del festival "Al-Quds Capital of Arab Culture 2009", confiscando documenti, anche personali, computer portatili, minacciando i membri del comitato. Sabato scorso, 21 marzo, la polizia israeliana ha attaccato una scuola e un centro locale, e oggi 23 marzo almeno sette persone, inclusi due attivisti per la pace, un americano e un danese,  sono stati arrestati durante una manifestazione di fronte alla tenda di Sheikh Jarrah, eretta per protestare contro l'allontanamento forzato di migliaia di Palestinesi residenti a Gerusalemme Est.

Secondo le Autorità israeliane il festival sarebbe illegale in quanto sponsorizzato dall'Autorità Nazionale Palestinese  e per impedirne lo svolgimento sono state stanziate forze supplementari di polizia.

Ogni attività dell'ANP, infatti, è stata bandita dalla città sin dal 2000. Gerusalemme Est è occupata illegalmente dal 1967 e considerata da Israele come "capitale eterna e indivisa" anche se la Comunità Internazionale non ha mai riconosciuto le mire israeliane su Gerusalemme Est. 

Queste azioni hanno chiaramente l'intento di cancellare sia fisicamente che culturalmente la presenza palestinese nella propria terra, annientando ogni eredità culturale, passata e presente, a dispetto di ogni legalità. 

Eppure tutte queste minacce non hanno impedito lo svolgersi del festival: l'apertura ufficiale si è tenuta domenica scorsa, 22 marzo, a Betlemme, aldilà del muro d'annessione coloniale voluto da Israele - con la partecipazione di circa 1.500 dignitari, delegati, poeti, ufficiali e personalità Palestinesi. Tra le attività, anche una serie di giochi tradizionali per bambini, condotti grazie a decine di volontari, alla Porta di Damasco, l'ingresso principale della città vecchia di Gerusalemme.

La Comunità Internazionale, Europa inclusa, deve dare un segnale forte per sostenere e garantire questo evento. Spetta a noi protestare in modo netto e deciso e fare pressioni su Israele per la fine di tutte le violazioni della legalità e per la fine dell'occupazione a Gerusalemme Est, così come in tutta la Cisgiordania occupata e nella Striscia di Gaza sotto assedio.

Dovremmo farlo, non solo per il diritto dei Palestinesi a vivere nella loro terra con la stessa sovranità degli Israeliani, ma anche per la nostra stessa dignità.

NEWS  By  LUISA MORGANTINIVice President of the European Parliament    ISRAEL TO BAN CELEBRATIONS OF EAST JERUSALEM ‘CAPITAL OF ARAB CULTURE’ STORMED AND ARRESTED 20 ORGANIZERS OF THE FESTIVAL AND INTERNATIONAL PEACE ACTIVISTS.  Strasbourg 23rd March 2009 While in East Jerusalem hundreds homes demolitions and evictions of Palestinians from their houses are still ongoing, also the Palestinian culture is a target of the Israeli policies.     At least 20 organizers have been arrested for attempting to celebrate Arab culture in the city of Jerusalem over the past two days. On 19th March Israeli soldiers broke into a meeting of senior planners for the Al-Quds Capital of Arab Culture 2009 events, seized documents, personal papers and one laptop and harassed committee members. On Saturday 21st, the Israeli police stormed a school and community centre, and today 23rd March at least seven people, including one American and one Danish solidarity activists, have been arrested during a protest tent in Sheikh Jarrah, which was erected to protest the evictions of Palestinian residents in East Jerusalem.  Moreover, additional police has been deployed in order to prevent the event because according to the Israeli Authorities, the festival is illegal since it is sponsored by the Palestinian Authority (PA).All PA activities have been banned in the city since 2000. East Jerusalem is illegally occupied since 1967 and later annexed  by Israel as his "eternal and indivisible capital" even if  the international community does not recognize Israeli rights over East Jerusalem. These are clear actions aimed to completely delete physically but also culturally the Palestinian presence from their own lands, erasing all cultural heritage, past and present, flying in the face of all legality.  However the threats have not changed plans for the event: the official opening day has been celebrated last Sunday 22nd in Bethlehem, behind the Israeli annexation wall, with the participation of about 1,500 dignitaries, delegates, poets, officials and Palestinian bureaucrats. Amongst the activities also series of traditional children’s games, run by dozens of volunteers, at Damascus Gate - the main entrance to the Old City. There is a need of a powerful signal by the International Community, including Europe, in order to support and guarantee the carrying out of this event. It’s up to us to firmly protest and to put pressure on Israel for the end of all its violation and of the occupation, in East Jerusalem, as well as in the entire occupied West Bank and in the besieged Gaza Strip.   We should do it, not only for the Palestinians’ right to live in their own land in  sovereignty as well as the Israelis, but also for our dignity.

L'UE, il Quartetto e l'intera Comunità Internazionale hanno il potere e il dovere di fermarle. Lo facciano!

La Municipalità di Gerusalemme sta pianificando la demolizione di 88 unità residenziali incluse 114 case abitate da circa 1500 residenti palestinesi del Quartiere al-Bustan a Silwan -Gerusalemme Est- per sostituirle con un parco archeologico in un luogo in cui, anche se in modo controverso, si ritiene che 3000 anni fa vi avesse vissuto re David. Inoltre altre 36 famiglie palestinesi, circa 230 persone, hanno ricevuto nuovi ordini di demolizione per le loro case nel quartiere di Abbasieh, sempre a Silwan, e altre 55 famiglie nel Campo profughi di Shu'fat devono evacuare le loro abitazioni, alzando a 179 il numero totale delle case palestinesi che secondo i piani dovranno essere demolite: ancora una volta, colpendo Gerusalemme Est, Israele mostra chiaramente la continuità della sua politica illegale e coloniale e distrugge ogni possibilità per la pace. 

 

Se queste demolizioni a Silwan, dove gruppi di coloni sono da tempo impiantati, saranno realizzate, si tratterebbe del più grande progetto di demolizioni sin dall'inizio dell'occupazione israeliana nel 1967, per di più in un'area storica e simbolica di Gerusalemme Est, a meno di 400 metri dalla Moschea di Al-Aqsa e dal Muro del Pianto. Secondo un'organizzazione israeliana per i diritti umani B'Tselem, le Autorità Israeliane hanno demolito circa 350 case a Gerusalemme Est dal 2004. Inoltre, per rapporti recenti (Peace Now) almeno 73.300 unità abitative israeliane saranno costruite in tutta la West Bank, raddoppiando il numero già esistente. Persino un gruppo di venti scrittori e ricercatori Israeliani - tra cui Amos Oz e David Grossman- in una lettera indirizzata al sindaco di Gerusalemme Nir Barkat hanno chiesto con urgenza di revocare le ordinanze di evacuazione di quelle persone dalle loro case perché tali politiche violano "i più elementari diritti umani" hanno dichiarato.

Demolire quelle case - le più recenti costruite più di 15 anni fa ma la gran parte costruite più di 80 anni fa, unico rifugio per generazioni e generazioni di palestinesi- rappresenterebbe un trasferimento forzato per migliaia di palestinesi, una catastrofe per molte famiglie -bambini, donne e anziani che saranno le persone che soffriranno di più- e anche un grande ostacolo per la ripresa di ogni negoziato di pace. 

 

Il comitato dei residenti di Silwan (più di 40,000 palestinesi), in una lettera indirizzata al nuovo Segretario di Stato americano Hillary Clinton hanno chiesto sforzi reali per fermare questi attacchi organizzati contro Silwan e altre aree di Gerusalemme, che sono azioni "contro la moralità di tutte le religioni e i popoli": ovvero stanno semplicemente reclamando i propri diritti in nome della giustizia e della legalità.

Il segretario di Stato americano Clinton, durante la sua visita in Cisgiordania, incontrando il Presidente Palestinese Mahmoud Abbas e il Primo Ministro (uscente) Salam Fayyad, ha definito le demolizioni israeliane delle case a Gerusalemme Est come "di nessun aiuto" per il processo di pace: ma la parola "unhelpful" non è abbastanza e non cambia i fatti sul terreno.

 

L'UE, il Quartetto e l'intera Comunità Internazionale hanno il potere e il dovere di fermare queste politiche. L'ultima delegazione di Membri del Parlamento Europeo ha potuto essere testimone della situazione durante una missione a Gaza e nella West Bank dal 26 febbraio al primo marzo: dopo la loro visita a Gerusalemme Est e l'incontro con la famiglia Al Kurd - che ancora vive in una tenda- hanno inviato una lettera di protesta a diverse autorità.

EAST JERUSALEM TARGET OF THE ISRAELI COLONIAL AND ETHNIC CLEANSING POLICIES 

The EU, the Quartet and the entire International Community have the power and the duty to stop it. So do it!

The Jerusalem Municipality is planning to demolish 88 residential units including 114 houses inhabited by 1500 Palestinian residents of al-Bustan Quarter in Silwan -East Jerusalem- in order to replace it with an archaeological park administered and financed by Israeli settlers. Moreover further 36 Palestinian families, about 230 people, received new demolition orders for their homes in Abbasieh Quarter, always in Silwan, and other 55 families in Shu'fat Camp have to evacuate their habitations, rising to 179 homes the total number of Palestinian homes planned to be demolished: once again, targeting East Jerusalem, Israel shows clearly the continuity of its illegal colonial policy and destroys all chance for peace.

If this demolitions in Silwan, where groups of settlers already established inside, will be actuated it would be the biggest plan since the beginning of the Israeli occupation in 1967, in an historical and symbolical area of East Jerusalem, at less than 400 meters from the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Wailing Wall. According to the Israeli B'Tselem human rights organization, Israeli Authorities have demolished some 350 houses in East Jerusalem since 2004. Furthermore, according to recent reports (Peace Now) at least 73,300 Israeli housing units are planned to be constructed in all the West Bank, doubling the yet existing number.

Even a group of twenty Israeli writers and researchers -including Amos Oz and David Grossman- in a letter addressed to Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat urged the government to rescind orders to evict people from their homes since such policies violate "elementary human rights" they said.

Demolishing those houses -the most recent ones built more than 15 years ago but many of them built over 80 years ago representing the only shelter for generations and generations- would represent a forced displacement for thousands of Palestinians, a catastrophe for many families -children, women and elders who will suffer the most- and also a great obstacle to the resumption of all peace negations. 

The Committee of the  residents of Silwan (more than 40,000 Palestinians), in a letter to the new US secretary of State Hillary Clinton called for true efforts to stop these organized offences against Silwan and other areas in Jerusalem, all actions "against of the morality of all religions and people": they simply claim their rights in the name of justice and legality.

The US secretary of State Clinton, during her visit to the West Bank, meeting the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and the Palestinian PM Salam Fayyad, defined the Israel's East Jerusalem home demolitions "unhelpful" for the peace process: but the word "unhelpful" is not enough and it doesn't change facts on the ground. The EU, the Quartet and the entire International Community have the power and the duty to stop these policies.

Last delegation of Members of the European Parliament witnessed the situation during a fact finding mission to Gaza and West Bank from 26th to 1st March: after their visit to East Jerusalem and the meeting with the Al Kurd family -still living in a tent- they sent a letter of protest to different authorities.
